How to Change the Battery in a Kia Key Fob

Handing off a Kia key fob

If your Kia key fob is malfunctioning as you try to enter your vehicle in New Orleans, you probably just need to replace its battery. Depending on whether you have a standard Kia key fob or a Kia Smart Key, the instructions for how to change the battery in a Kia key fob will vary slightly. The Kia experts at Ray Brandt Kia provide step-by-step instructions for how to open a Kia key fob and swap out the battery in both instances, below!

What Type of Kia Key Fob Do I Have?

If you’re not sure what type of key fob you have, a quick visual inspection should tell you. The standard Kia key fob has a small, circular silver button in the upper left corner to release the mechanical key blade from the side of the fob. The Kia Smart Key houses the mechanical key inside the fob, rather than on the side; instead of a button in the upper left corner, you’ll find a small rectangular release button on the lower backside of the Kia Smart Key fob. Additionally, the Smart Key is reserved for Kia vehicles that have keyless entry and keyless start functions.

How to Open a Kia Key Fob and Change the Battery

Standard Kia Key Fob Instructions

  1. Turn the key fob so the front side is facing down
  2. Wedge the tip of a small flathead screwdriver into the slot on the side of the fob (opposite the side that houses the mechanical key)
  3. Gently pry the casing off of the key fob
  4. Remove the old battery
  5. Set the new battery in place
  6. Replace the casing on the key fob, squeezing it shut

Kia Smart Key Fob Instructions

  1. Press the small silver button at the bottom of the fob to release the emergency mechanical key
  2. With the emergency key now out, you can use it to open the key fob
  3. You’ll see a slot at the bottom of the key fob that matches the size of the mechanical key
  4. Insert the key into the slot, then gently twist it in either direction. This will pry open the key fob casing
  5. Carefully finish pulling the fob fully apart
  6. Remove the old battery
  7. Set the new battery in place, with the writing on the battery facing down
  8. Gently snap the key fob back together, being careful not to damage any internal Smart Key components in the process

What Type of Battery Does the Kia Key Fob Use?

Both the standard Kia key fob and the Kia Smart Key take a single 2032 battery. You can buy this type of battery at most major department stores, automotive stores, or online.
