What to do with Car Interior Water Damage

Whether the windows were left open after a Marrero rainfall overnight or your car was stuck on a flooded street, water can be detrimental to your vehicle. Car water damage can harm the electrical components, cause problems with your brakes, leave mold and mildew, and/or irreparably harm your engine. Once you notice you’ve got water-related car damage, here’s what you should do:

  • Survey car damage: Get an idea of the systems that could have been affected by water damage, although, keep in mind it can spread further than you think. Avoid starting the engine as it will just cause more damage if water is in the engine.
  • Create an air flow to reduce mold: It’s a good idea to create an airflow as soon as possible. Mold and mildew can start building quickly, especially if it’s salt water as it’s more damaging than fresh water.
  • Contact your insurance company: On top of scheduling a visit with a mechanic, inform your insurance company of your car damage so they can send an inspector to evaluate whether repairs can be made or if it’s a total loss.
  • Check the interior and remove all moisture: When the water is more than a few feet deep, it’s likely you’ll see car interior water damage. Using a wet/dry vacuum and several cloth towels, remove any standing water and absorb as much water as possible from the seats and carpet. Fans and dehumidifiers can also be used to clean car flood damage.
  • Contact a towing service: Car water damage can even spread to the oil, transmission fluid, and lube. Have your vehicle taken to a service center to see if the mechanic can salvage the systems. During your visit, they’ll also assess the electrical components to see which parts need to be replaced and check the fuel tank and line to see if water is present.
  • Get a thorough clean: Once the vehicle is dry, it’s a good idea to deep clean with a shampoo as the soap helps get rid of any lingering bacteria and any lingering smells. If damp spots still remain, you can try targeting those areas with a hairdryer, absorbing baking soda, and a mildewcide.
